August 18, 2010: Great leaders 'Care'

Caring, considerate and sensitive are the most important qualities of a top leader, according to a recent survey conducted by ClarkMorgan Corporate Training.

The survey, which surveyed 169 Chinese employees working for a mix of multinational and international Chinese firms, including Huawei and Lenovo, is an interesting snap-shot at the values of Chinese workers today. Respondents were based across the country, in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Tianjin. Powerful, intelligent, charismatic and open minded made up the top 5.

Morry Morgan, director of ClarkMorgan Corporate Training and coordinator of the study, said that as the survey asked respondents to list 5 qualities of a great leader, without providing multiple choice answers, there was a large number of qualities listed.

"The respondents used both Chinese and English to answer, and both languages have many synonyms for the same word. For this reason we grouped a few words together, such as caring, considerate and sensitive. However, even after grouping similar words, we still identified over 75 distinct qualities of leadership," says Morgan.

Interestingly, some of China's traditional values were low down on the list. Diligent just made it into the top 40, and humility, was out of the top 50.

"This was a very interesting result, as while both qualities are no doubt important, a lot of foreign text books on China may be attaching too much importance to these qualities," says Morgan.

ClarkMorgan Corporate Training plans to survey at least 250 Chinese employees, before releasing all the data, after which, they will be applying the results to about 50 China based companies.

"Once we know confidently what the top 10 qualities of a top leader are, according to Chinese employees, we are planning to anonymously test approximately 50 China-based leaders, both Chinese locals and foreign expatriates. We will then interview the top five, and find out what it is that they do on a daily basis that makes them so well received by their staff," says Morgan.

The findings of these interviews will support ClarkMorgan Corporate Training management training programs.
