Our survey asked respondents to list the top 5 qualities of a leader, without giving any suggestions. To date over 75 qualities have been identified, but ‘Caring’ was clearly number one, with 16% of respondents indicating that it was a preferred quality in their leaders.

On the other end of the management spectrum, ‘Powerful/Strong/Authoritative’ came in at number two. In essence, Chinese employees are stating that they want a leader who is tough, but fair – comparable to a parent.

Some of China’s traditional values were low down on the list. Diligent just made it into the top 40, and humility, was out of the top 50. This was a very interesting result, as while both qualities are no doubt important, a lot of foreign text books on China may be attaching too much importance to these qualities.

ClarkMorgan conducts research into leadership qualities each year and combines the results with our leadership & management courses.
