The Power of Love

SIX HOURS INTO THE SECOND day of a presentations training I delivered not long ago, one of my trainees asks me, “How do you stay so energetic?” “That’s a good question,” I thought. In fact, I only had 4 ½ hours of sleep the night before, and only 4 ½ hours of sleep the night before that (something that’s become a habit lately).

“It must be the coffee,” I replied.

Later that night, another person asks me the same question; and over the next two weeks, I will have heard this question no less than five times.

After reviewing my Trainer Appraisal scores, training feedback provided by participants of my training, I notice that my rating for “Energy and Passion” over the last five courses I delivered is a 4.7, 4.8, 4.9 and two perfect 5s.

I don’t think much more about this until the next day when I’m back at the office answering emails. It’s almost lunch time and I have spent the entire morning responding to what seems like a thousand emails in my inbox. I can barely stay awake. One of my colleagues says to me, “I guess you didn’t get much sleep last night.” “Actually, I say, “I slept 8 hours last night and have been drinking coffee all morning.”

At that moment I realize something, it’s not coffee that keeps me going and it doesn’t have much to do with how much sleep I get; it’s one simple thing… LOVE. I love training. I love inspiring, motivating, and instilling passion in others; and I love helping people achieve their goals and dreams.

This reminds me of five simple words I used as my motto for many years. I think it’s time to bring them back:

~ Live, Love, Share, and Inspire.

Although I haven’t used this motto for a while, anyone who knows me has probably heard me quote another famous man in China. His sayings are very similar. One I enjoy in particular is, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” So many of us are stuck in jobs that are going nowhere; that we only took for the money; and that suck energy from us instead of instilling passion and motivation in us.

From this perspective, I can honestly say that I’m the luckiest man I know. I have an amazing family (not only the one at home, but also the one at work); I work every day in a job I love and am surrounded by people that I enjoy communicating, working and spending time with.

If you don’t feel the same way about yourself and your job, remember Confucius’ words; get into a job you love and enjoy the energy and passion that comes with it. The people around you will enjoy that energy too and it will make all the difference in the world.

This kind of energy is worth more than all the coffee money can buy; or as I used to say in America, “all the tea in China.”

    Gary,
Your energy is infectious too! I thoroughly enjoyed the Trainer Retreat in December where the whole training team was together, and although it was exhausting you kept us ‘inspired’!
Life is easy when you have a job you love, and it is made even better when you have a great team too!
