HORSE! NOW I HAVE THAT OUT OF THE WAY I shall resist the urge to wax lyrical about what this equine themed year will offer  those of you born in 1966, 1978, et cetera, and aim for a more general plan of attack for 2014. It’s not that I have any major issue with traditions and superstitions which allow people to think positively about the future based on lunar movements and star alignments; I am however a little edgy about any idea which allows you to abdicate responsibility for poor results or mistakes by blaming the year (China) or month (The West) of your birth.

You’ve probably come across the biblical expression ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. That is sound advice for people from any culture and belief. Thus, I plan to make an even more conscious effort in 2014 to consider how my behaviour effects those around me and to inspire others around me to behave in a similar way. After all, leading by example is something that should always be at the forefront of a manager’s mind.

2014 is going to be my ‘Year of Respect’. This doesn’t mean that I plan to bow and scrape to all and sundry. It means that I will ensure that my actions, my communication style and all other aspects of my behaviour should be designed to have a positive impact on others. From stepping back to allow others to leave the subway car/elevator before I enter, to setting deadlines which allow others plenty of time to achieve them. From replying promptly and clearly to all correspondence, to producing work of the highest standard possible.

Respect can be given but it cannot be demanded. Managers who do require overt displays of respectful behaviour are simply drawing attention to their own insecurities. The fundamentals of management is that one can ‘talk the talk and walk the walk’ and in doing so build effective teams by setting the example for others to follow.

So, the choice is yours. You can sit back and hope that all the stars align this year and good things fall into your lap and blame the bad things on a lack of luck (ie. be a victim), or, you can take this year by the scruff of the neck, focus on the areas where your behaviour can have a direct influence on events and treat others in a way that you would like to be treated, that is, be responsible.

Be you a Capricorn or a Libra, a horse or a snake, get out there and make it happen. Nobody and no astrological symmetry can impact your future as much as you can. Set an example and be the example for others and watch as this year quickly becomes one to remember.

I feel that 2014 is going to be my year too. I’m very up for a huge step forward in terms of achievement and success, things that require effort but I do feel are achievable.
