YESTERDAY I WAS LOOKING THROUGH MY CALENDAR, and came across a course that I would be attending as a trainee in about three weeks time. And something great happened – I cracked a smile. I was genuinely excited about my upcoming personal and professional development.
At ClarkMorgan we believe in ‘Evolving People’ and actively undertake this at all levels of the organisation. This internal training is not only necessary to maintain our mantra, but it’s also rewarding. For example, after a recent internal course on Communication Skills for ClarkMorgan staff, our National IT Manager emailed me and thanked me for “The best course (he had) ever taken”. Our staff are passionate about learning.
Yet, surprisingly, we continuously encounter the need to help HR and training professionals create buy-in to training within their organisation. Why is it that such a great opportunity is so often looked down upon within organisations?
One fault is the obstacle created by managers that feel training is a waste of their employees time or money. This simply highlights immaturity within these managers, who have forgotten that their main role as senior professionals is to coach and mentor their staff, not push them to their limits and eventual burnout. In his autobiography, Jack: Straight from the Gut, Jack Welch highlights the handful of critical projects he undertook while at the GE helm. Not surprisingly one of them was creating a leadership institute and revitalising the approach to training.
The focus on training, need not only come from the top. As a manager, or a team leader, think about your priorities and the ones you place on your team. Are you focused on achieving the target, no matter the cost to your employees? Are you focusing on developing your people, confident that a strong team will lead to strong results?
In China, business life moves quickly, and people ascend and take on new responsibilities. However, the blueprint for success is no different in China, than it is in the rest of the world – invest in training your people. So whether you want to be the best training company in China, or the best training department in your industry, first understand that your role as a leader is to embed a culture of learning in your organisation. Their evolution will then happen naturally.
